My element is Yttrium. It atomic number is 39 and was found in a town called Ytteruby, which is located in Sweden. Yttrium was discovered in 1789. My print is a television with an antenna and sparks behind it because Yttrium's main use is in television. Yttrium is what gives us the red color without it we wouldn't have red on the television. The sparks behind it are meant to represent the fact that, if in flakes, Yttrium is explosive when air hits it.
I made my print by first researching what to make and then drawing it out. Drawing it out took some time because I wasn't sure how to convey my ideas. After that I traced the drawing onto the linoleum and cut it out. I had to cut out the parts that we didn’t what to print so any of the negative space. This was very hard and time consuming. I then had to print the cut out many times about 20. This made a huge mess and was very hard to get right. One of the issues was that the sparks weren't coming out right and they seemed weird in the picture.
I liked printing the best. I was a lot of mess but it was also fun. I got to use many different colors and I got to redesign my print many times to make the sparks look right. If I could redo this project I would like to cut the linoleum better. I wasn't happy with the roughness of the edges and the sparks seemed too much. I think i could have spent more time on the designing and less on the cutting. If I had designed the sparks more evenly they may have looked better.
All in all this project took a lot of time but it was worth it. The prints were pretty and fun to make.
